Good Words and Some Good People of our Club

Executive Board & Board of Directors

Meet our club leadership and find out why they love the STCGH!

History of the Club

The Scottish Terrier Club of Greater Houston was formed in February, 1974 by a group of fanciers for the purpose of sharing information about our beloved breed, sponsoring Specialties shows and providing breed related education for the Houston and surrounding area. There were 11 members at inception, 3 of which are still members. After receiving sanction from the parent club, the Scottish Terrier Club of America, the Club worked diligently on sponsoring “A” and “B” matches to train members in preparation for AKC sanctioned shows. The first show was held in conjunction with the Houston Combined Specialty Assoc. in March of 1983. Dick Hensel was the Judge for regular classes and Jerry Roszman was the Sweepstakes Judge. There were 18 entries in Sweeps and 40 in the regular classes including 2 brood bitches.

The Club hosted the STCA National Rotating Specialty in 1991 and again in 2010. The Club Specialty is held in July of each year in conjunction with the Houston World Series of Dog Shows. The Club participates in the “Meet the Breed” program as part of continuing education about the Scottish Terrier to the general public. This is followed by the annual Banquet Dinner and Auction. The Club also hosts an annual Holiday Party.

Over the years the Club has hosted health related programs, educational seminars on breeding, whelping, handling and presentation of the breed standard. The Club has also held several successful Grooming Seminars offering highly renowned instructors and has attracted attendance from all around the country. The Club continues annually with other various fund raising events. Members also enjoy the fun and social activity of the popular “Paint Party” activities which depict, of course the Scottie!

Membership in the Club includes exhibitors, breeders and and pet owners. Members have participated in Lure Coursing, Earth Dog events, Fun Matches, and Barn Hunt events. Members have also served on the Board of the STCA and as Editor of the STCA quarterly publication “The Bagpiper”. The Club meets monthly, publishes a quarterly e-newsletter “The Skirl” and also has a social media presence on Facebook.
