Meet the Breed

The American Kennel Club program “Meet the Breed” event gives dog lovers the unique opportunity to meet and play with more than 100 different breeds and to learn each breed’s country of origin, historical purpose/function, and attributes as a family pet, all while learning about responsible dog ownership and which breeds may be right for them

The Scottish Terrrier Club of Greater Houston is proud to present the Scottie to the people of Houston, Texas each year at this event. Club breeders Kelli Edell and Claudia Leffler lead the way with a wonderful presentation of their puppies and champions. Other club members bring their family pets and performance Scotties to help round out the full representation of the diversity of the Scottish Terrier.

Meet the Scottish Terrier

The Scottie is a small, compact, short-legged, sturdily built dog of good bone and substance. He is certainly descended from the sturdy, rough-coated terrier with a weather-resistant coat that was a working and hunting dog hundreds of years ago in Scotland.  The Scots called the ancestral dog the “die-hard”, which describes his overall nature almost perfectly. Confident, resilient and dignified, a Scottie takes life in stride and accepts what it bring shim.

The Scottie is an extraordinary and versatile breed. With training, many participate in a variety of activities such as agility, barn hunt, obedience, rally, lure coursing, therapy/service work and conformation. Always on alert and not easily rattled, he’s a calm, loving companion who forms a tight attachment to his owners.

Please visit the Scottish Terrier Club of America for more information on the Scottish Terrier.
